School Wide Positive Behaviour (SWPB)

At South Geelong Primary School, we are committed to creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment where every student can succeed.

We use School‑Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) — an evidence‑based framework that helps students learn and practise positive behaviours across all areas of school life.

SWPBS ensures that teachers and students have more time to focus on learning, relationships and wellbeing.

Our Approach

At South Geelong Primary School, we take a proactive approach to behaviour by:

  • explicitly teaching expected behaviours
  • modelling what positive behaviour looks like
  • providing opportunities for students to practise
  • recognising and celebrating positive choices
  • supporting students to reflect and improve

This consistent approach helps build a strong culture where all students feel safe, respected and ready to learn.

Our School Values

Our behaviour expectations are grounded in our core values:

  • Kindness – using kind words, actions and tone
  • Respect – showing care for ourselves, others and the environment
  • Integrity – doing the right thing, even when no one is watching

These values guide how students learn, interact and make choices every day.

Teaching Expected Behaviour

We explicitly teach students what positive behaviour looks like through our Positive Behaviour Matrix.

This matrix:

  • outlines expected behaviours across all school settings
  • is displayed in classrooms and throughout the school
  • is regularly referred to and discussed with students

Teachers support students by:

  • explaining why behaviours are important
  • modelling expected behaviours
  • providing regular opportunities to practise
  • giving clear and specific feedback

This ensures students develop the skills they need to be successful at school and beyond.

Acknowledging Positive Behaviour

We believe in recognising and reinforcing positive behaviour.

Students are acknowledged through:

  • specific verbal praise linked to school values
  • RKI tokens (pronounced “Ricky”) when demonstrating Kindness, Respect and Integrity

RKI tokens are collected within classrooms and contribute to our school community rewards system, building a sense of teamwork, pride and belonging.

Responding to Behaviour

We understand that students are still learning and may need support to make positive choices.

When behaviour does not meet expectations, staff use a consistent, supportive process:

  1. Reminder – prompt the expected behaviour
  2. Re‑teach – model and practise the behaviour
  3. Choice – provide clear options
  4. Reflection – support students to learn and improve

This approach focuses on teaching, restoring and building skills, rather than punishment.

Building Belonging Through Our Communities

Students belong to one of our three school communities, which promote connection, teamwork and pride:

  • Warri (Blue – Salt Water)
  • Lakorra (Yellow – Sky)
  • Yaluk (Red – River)

Each community is connected to Wadawurrung language and our local environment, helping students develop a strong sense of identity and belonging.

Our Commitment

Through SWPBS, we are committed to:

  • building positive relationships
  • explicitly teaching social and behavioural skills
  • maintaining high and consistent expectations
  • supporting every student to thrive
