Mathematics

At South Geelong Primary School, our Mathematics program develops students who are confident problem‑solvers and strategic thinkers.

We provide a structured, sequential program aligned with the Victorian Curriculum F–10, ensuring students build strong mathematical knowledge and skills over time.

How students learn Mathematics

Our approach is guided by the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) and evidence‑based teaching practices.

In Mathematics lessons, teachers:

  • use explicit teaching to introduce new concepts clearly
  • model thinking and problem‑solving processes
  • provide worked examples before independent practice
  • use questioning to deepen understanding
  • provide multiple opportunities for practice and application

Students learn to:

  • develop number fluency and mathematical understanding
  • solve problems using different strategies
  • explain and justify their thinking
  • apply mathematics in real‑world contexts

Building confidence and independence

We place a strong focus on:

  • growth mindset and persistence
  • learning from mistakes
  • using feedback to improve

Assessment is used regularly to guide teaching and ensure students continue to grow.

Teachers use a range of strategies to:

  • identify student needs
  • adjust learning tasks
  • track progress over time
