English

At South Geelong Primary School, our English program supports students to become confident readers, writers, speakers and listeners.

We deliver a structured and evidence‑based curriculum aligned with the Victorian Curriculum F–10, ensuring all students develop strong literacy skills that support success across all learning areas.

How students learn English

Our teaching is guided by the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) and High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS). This means learning is carefully planned to reflect how students learn best.

In English lessons, teachers:

  • use explicit teaching to clearly model reading and writing skills
  • break learning into small, achievable steps
  • provide guided and independent practice
  • give timely, specific feedback to support improvement
  • revisit and practise skills regularly to build confidence and fluency

Students are supported to:

  • read a wide range of texts for meaning and enjoyment
  • develop strong phonics, fluency and comprehension skills
  • write for different purposes and audiences
  • communicate ideas clearly through speaking and listening

Supporting every learner

We use ongoing assessment to understand each student’s progress and plan next steps in learning.

Teachers:

  • adjust teaching to meet individual needs
  • provide targeted support or extension
  • monitor growth over time

This ensures every student is known, supported and challenged to succeed.
